Communication Specialist, Communications

Location: Remote
Reports to: Content Manager

Position Summary:

Work alongside the Content Manager and the wider Communications team to turn the department's content strategy into finished emails, Substack posts, web copy, and campaign materials. Write and adapt content for Joshua Project's audiences, help build and send campaigns, maintain email audiences, and track results so the team can see what is working.

Campaigns are a shared effort. This role works day to day with design, social media, web, and multilingual team members so each campaign goes out complete, on schedule, and consistent with Joshua Project's voice and terminology.


Essential Roles and Responsibilities:

1. Campaign Execution

  • Help carry out multi-channel communication campaigns planned by the Content Manager across email, Substack, and the Joshua Project website.
  • Build, schedule, and send email campaigns in Mailchimp, including copy, layout, links, and final testing before launch.
  • Prepare and update campaign landing pages and resource pages in coordination with the web team.
  • Track assigned campaign tasks against their timelines and flag risks to the Content Manager and Project Manager early.

2. Content Writing & Adaptation

  • Draft emails, Substack posts, web copy, resource descriptions, and campaign messaging as assigned by the Content Manager.
  • Adapt long-form Joshua Project content, such as articles, guides, and books, into shorter formats suited to each channel and audience.
  • Submit drafts to the Content Manager for review and incorporate feedback before publication.

3. Email & Audience Management

  • Maintain Mailchimp audiences, tags, and segments so each audience receives content suited to its relationship with Joshua Project.
  • Keep contact lists clean and current, including managing sign-up forms, bounces, and unsubscribes.
  • Run simple tests on subject lines, send times, and calls to action, and share what is learned.

4. General

  • Report regularly to the Content Manager on campaign status, results, and needed decisions.
  • Organize campaign files and assets in the Communications Department's OneDrive using current naming conventions.
  • Support other Communications Department projects and tasks as needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience writing clear, accurate copy for email, web, or blog channels.
  • Experience using an email marketing platform (e.g., Mailchimp or similar tools), including audience segmentation and campaign scheduling.
  • Ability to adapt one message for different audiences and channels without losing accuracy.
  • Comfort reading basic analytics and turning results into practical recommendations.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple campaigns and deadlines at once.
  • Detail-oriented with strong proofreading skills and follow-through.
  • Ability to receive editorial feedback well and apply it consistently.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with design, social media, web, and multilingual team members in a remote setting.
  • Familiarity with website content management systems, Substack, or Microsoft 365 tools (OneDrive, SharePoint, Planner) is a plus.
  • Experience with basic video creation or editing, such as short-form video for email, web, or social media, is a plus but not required.
  • Familiarity with missions terminology, including unreached people groups and Frontier People Groups, is a plus.

  • Demonstrates a thorough understanding of the Bible.
  • Evidences God's calling to play a role in his mission to spread the gospel among all peoples of the world.
  • Has the ability to work closely with a team and can set aside personal interests for what is best for the team.
  • Can graciously submit to those in authority.
  • Is age twenty-one or older.
  • Aligns with Joshua Project's statement on marriage, gender, and sexuality.
  • Shows evidence of good emotional, physical, financial, and mental health.
  • Demonstrates a healthy relationship with a local evangelical church.
  • Agrees with the Lausanne Covenant, World Evangelical Alliance statement of faith, and Joshua Project's core values.
  • Prior experience in marketing, communications, or content creation, preferably within a nonprofit or ministry setting.
  • A portfolio or samples of written work across more than one channel.

Minimum Physical Requirements:

  • Must have the ability to type written communication, speak, and hear with clarity to facilitate good communication in virtual meetings.
  • The duties of this job frequently require the worker to sit for extended periods of time.
