Introduction / History

The Bokwa-Kendem are a small ethnic community living in the Manyu area of Cameroon's Southwest Region along the road that connects Bamenda and Mamfe. They are closely associated with the villages of Bokwa and Kendem and speak the Kendem language, a member of the Niger-Congo language family. The Kendem language is also known as Bokwa-Kendem and is related to other languages spoken in the Cameroon-Nigeria border region. The Bokwa-Kendem have maintained a distinct cultural identity despite living among several neighboring ethnic groups. Their history is closely connected to the forested hills and farming lands of southwestern Cameroon, where village life continues to play an important role in preserving community traditions.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most Bokwa-Kendem live in rural communities where agriculture provides the foundation of daily life. Families cultivate crops suited to the tropical climate and depend on farming for food and income. Villages are usually organized around extended family relationships, and cooperation among relatives is important during planting, harvesting, and community events.

Traditional customs continue to influence social life. Respect for elders, family solidarity, and community participation are highly valued. Oral traditions help pass down history, cultural knowledge, and moral lessons from one generation to the next. While many people participate in modern education and commerce, village life remains closely tied to the land and local customs.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Bokwa-Kendem identify as Christians, and churches have become an important part of community life. Christian celebrations, worship services, and church gatherings provide opportunities for fellowship and spiritual instruction. At the same time, some people continue to hold traditional religious beliefs that emphasize the influence of ancestors and spiritual forces in everyday life. In some cases, these beliefs are blended with Christian practices.

Many people seek protection, guidance, or healing through both Christian and traditional means. This mixture of beliefs can create uncertainty about the unique authority of Jesus Christ and the message of salvation found in the gospel. Continued biblical teaching and discipleship are needed so that believers can grow in their understanding of God's word.

What Are Their Needs?

The Bokwa-Kendem need opportunities for economic development, quality education, and improved access to services that can strengthen family and community life. Rural communities often face challenges related to transportation, employment opportunities, and access to resources.

Spiritually, there is a need for stronger discipleship and biblical teaching. The Kendem language still needs a complete Bible translation, which limits access to Scripture in the language people understand best. Local churches would benefit from additional training, leadership development, and resources that help believers mature in their faith and share the gospel with others.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Bokwa-Kendem will gain access to God's word in their own language.
Pray that believers among the Bokwa-Kendem will grow in spiritual maturity and develop a strong biblical foundation.
Pray that local church leaders will be equipped to teach scripture faithfully and disciple others.
Pray that those who continue to rely on traditional spiritual practices will come to place their trust fully in Jesus Christ.
Pray that Bokwa-Kendem Christians will participate in taking the gospel to neighboring peoples who have little or no Christian witness.
