The Mikasuki Seminole are descendants of the Hitchiti-speaking peoples of the Creek Confederacy who migrated into southern Florida during the 18th and 19th centuries. Seeking refuge from U.S. military removal efforts, they settled deep in the Everglades and maintained their independence during the Seminole Wars. Living in small camps, they preserved their language and traditions apart from outside control. In 1962, the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida gained federal recognition as a distinct group from the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Mikasuki is their primary language.
Today, the Mikasuki Seminole live mainly along the Tamiami Trail and in the Big Cypress region of southern Florida. Their communities blend traditional practices—such as building chickees, crafting, and storytelling—with modern life that includes schools, healthcare, and tribal governance. Economic activities include tourism, agriculture, and crafts, while some still hunt and fish in the Everglades. English is widely spoken, though efforts continue to preserve the endangered Mikasuki language.
Mikasuki religious life reflects a blend of ancient traditions and Christianity. Traditional beliefs emphasize respect for nature, community, and the Creator, with ceremonies like the Green Corn Dance marking renewal and gratitude. Christian influence grew through Baptist and other missionaries in the 20th century, and many today identify with both worldviews. Worship often occurs in community gatherings, homes, or outdoor settings that connect faith with the land.
Language preservation is a pressing concern as few young people speak Mikasuki fluently. Environmental challenges in the Everglades—such as water management and habitat loss—directly affect their livelihood and cultural identity. Continued development of education, healthcare, and economic opportunities that honor cultural values is essential. Strengthening intergenerational ties can help sustain traditions while supporting modern growth.
Pray for Mikasuki believers to wholeheartedly embrace the Great Commission and faithfully preach the gospel and make disciples among their people and the world around them.
Pray for the faithful translation of the complete Bible in the Mikasuki heart language.
Pray for more discipleship and outreach resources to be translated and widely distributed among the Mikasuki peoples.
Pray asking God to raise up Christian leaders that will shepherd their communities in love and patience for God's glory.
Pray that the Mikasuki people would fall in love with the true Creator, the Lord Jesus Christ.
