The Northern Paiute are part of the Numic people, native Americans who lived in the western United States – predominantly California, Nevada, and Oregon. They were originally seminomadic, moving seasonally to fish, hunt, and gather food, including piñon nuts.
Today, the Northern Paiutes are mostly sedentary. The men often engage in seasonal jobs such as ranching and agricultural work, while the women serve in the hospitality and healthcare industries.
The Northern Paiute have traditionally believed in the power ("pooha") of nature, worshipping and appeasing spirits of animals, plants, mountains, rivers, and the elements. Failure to respect and listen to the spirit world, they believe, can result in bad fortune and even death. They continue to hold regional events (powwows) to pass their culture to their children.
The Northern Paiute, like all people, need to hear the truth of the gospel message. They continue to live under the fear and oppression of spirits and are waiting to be set free by Jesus Christ.
Pray for more Northern Paiute to respond to the Good News. Pray for the Lord to liberate them from the deception of their animistic practices and reveal his forgiveness and eternal life.
