The Banyoro people, also known as Nyoro/Bakitara, are a Bantu ethnic group native to the kingdom of Bunyoro in Uganda. They live in settlements on a well-watered and fertile plateau, in western Uganda, east of Lake Mobutu. The region comprises the districts of Buliisa, Hoima, Kibaale, Kiryandongo and Masindi.
They speak the Nyoro language, also known as Runyoro. In the Paluo area of northern Bunyoro, a language related to the Luo language is also spoken.
The Bunyoro Kingdom was one of the most powerful kingdoms in Central and East Africa from the 13th century to the 19th century. Today, the kingdom is one of the administrative regions that make up the modern Republic of Uganda, and it is ruled by the King (Omukama) of Bunyoro-Kitara.
The Banyoro people reside in settlements across their region, with clan systems remaining integral to their social structure. In each family, the father holds a position of authority as the "mukama" or master/head of the household, overseeing family members and possessions.
Traditionally, the Banyoro are agriculturalists, cultivating crops such as millet, sorghum, bananas, and yams, and raising livestock, especially goats, sheep, chickens, and turkeys.
They also preserve their culture through traditional dances, music, and storytelling.
In the past, the Banyoro had a complex system of traditional beliefs and practices, including a belief in ghosts and ancestral spirits. Today, 93.0% of Banyoro people are Christians, with a small number adhering to Islam.
While Christianity is dominant, some Nyoro still incorporate elements of traditional beliefs into their lives, sometimes blending them with their Christian faith. Spirit possession cults, like the Cwezi cult, are part of the traditional belief system, focusing on beneficial spirits of a powerful ancestral race and ritual practices to ensure fertility, health, and prosperity.
A substantial portion of the Banyoros, estimated at over 92%, lives in poverty, earning significantly less than the national average. Only a small percentage of the population has access to electricity for basic needs like lighting and cooking. Many Banyoros lack access to education, with Illiteracy rates approximated to 50% of the population.
Although a significant number of Banyoro individuals have embraced Christianity, there is a notable lack of missional movement among them. They still require mobilization and equipping for mission work.

Pray that Chwezi converts will deepen their faith in the Lord, trusting in him amidst external cultic influences.
Pray that the Banyoro people will understand their divine calling and identity in the kingdom of God, recognizing that their heavenly heritage surpasses their earthly kingdom, and that they will commit themselves to fulfilling God's purposes.
Pray that the younger generation will develop a deep hunger and fervent passion for God's mission, pursuing it with unwavering dedication and zeal.
