Introduction / History

The Southern Paiute historically lived in the Colorado River basin, in the states of Nevada, Arizona, and Utah. The word "Paiute" means "water" in Ute and refers to their tendency to live near reliable water sources for farming. They were and continue to be skilled at weaving baskets.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Southern Paiute have never been organized into formal tribes. Instead, they are divided by families and led by a headman or by elders who make significant decisions and settle conflicts.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Southern Paiute believe in the power of the land. They designate "holy lands" where they gather to trade and hold ceremonies to honor a variety of spirits and ghosts. Shamans are considered to be powerful liaisons with the supernatural world. Today, many continue to practice their traditional religion, sometimes combining it with Mormonism.

What Are Their Needs?

The Southern Paiute struggle with poverty and long-standing issues of violence and displacement. They need hope, which will not come from human means.

Prayer Items

Pray for the truth of the gospel to penetrate the darkness that stands against the ways of Jesus Christ.
Pray for them to find hope and joy in Jesus Christ; so much so that they turn away from the spirit world.
Ask the Lord to minister healing to the Southern Paiute and send workers who will assist them in sustainable economic development.
