Introduction / History

The Kokama are a people who have had contact with non-Indigenous society since the early decades of colonization.

What Are Their Lives Like?

They practice farming, fishing, hunting, and gathering. Agriculture is done mostly by households, often nuclear families. Cassava (manioc) is the most consumed and produced agricultural product. Other products for market include fish, bananas, fruits, honey, nuts, wood, chickens, pigs. Agricultural work is divided: families work together at some stages, then individual households do their planting, tending, harvest, processing, etc.
They live in floodplain ecosystems. Part of their lands is flooded periodically by the rising rivers.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Kokama have shamanistic traditions. They believe in life after death as a place without suffering or limits, a place where one can enjoy things that are hard or dangerous in the earthly life.

What Are Their Needs?

They need access to health and education, but most of all, they need Jesus.

Prayer Points

Pray for God to open their eyes to the One and Only God.
Pray for missionaries to help in their needs so they can get to their hearts and show them Jesus.
Ask God to reveal himself in an undeniable way.
Pray that soon the Kokamas will be Christ's ambassadors to other tribes.
