Introduction / History
Gciriku is the name of a traditional Namibian kingdom. It’s also the name of a tribe that is prominent in Namibia. They also live in Botswana and Namibia.
The Gciriku kingdom was one of the first in Namibia to accept missionaries in the early 1900s. Ironically, their king, Hompa Nyangana (1874-1924), frowned on Western influence, especially that coming from missionaries. Despite this setback, missionaries settled in the region and established a mission station.
Their language, Gciriku, is one of the many Bantu languages of southern Africa.
What Are Their Lives Like?
They grow maize, watermelons, and pumpkins. They are beekeepers and make bricks for their homes. The Gcirikus are best known for their beautiful baskets.
What Are Their Beliefs?
Though traditional religion is still an important part of their spiritual lives, about two-thirds are Christian. They have a New Testament and audio recordings in their language.
What Are Their Needs?
Gcirikus need adequate medical care. They have goods to trade, but they lack adequate roads to move them to market.
