The Hangaza are a Bantu ethnolinguistic group located primarily in the Ngara and Biharamulo districts of the Kagera Region in northwestern Tanzania. Their language, Hangaza (Kihangaza), is part of the Niger-Congo language family and is closely related to the languages of Rwanda and Burundi.Historically, the Hangaza have lived in the highland regions near the borders of Rwanda and Burundi. Both Bantu heritage and interactions with neighboring groups have shaped their culture and language.
Hangazas are primarily subsistence farmers, cultivating crops such as bananas, beans, maize, and cassava. They also raise livestock and engage in small-scale trade. Their communities are organized around extended family units, and traditional leadership structures still play a role in local governance. The region is rural and relatively underdeveloped, with limited access to healthcare, education, and infrastructure. However, the Hangazas maintain a strong sense of cultural identity through oral traditions, music, and dance.
The majority of Hangaza people identify as Christians. The dominant Christian denominations include Roman Catholicism and various Protestant churches. However, traditional beliefs—including ancestor veneration and spirit worship—are still practiced, especially in rural areas. This syncretism means that while many profess Christianity, traditional worldviews continue to influence daily life and spiritual practices.
The Hangaza people need greater access to Scripture in their heart language. While some Bible resources exist, full engagement with Scripture is limited. Many believers lack access to sound theological education and spiritual mentorship. Evangelistic media tools are needed. The JESUS Film and gospel recordings are not yet available in Hangaza.Youth-focused ministries are essential. Younger generations are increasingly influenced by secularism and need relevant spiritual guidance.
Pray for the translation and distribution of the whole Bible in the Hangaza language.Pray for them to have the JESUS Film in their language.Pray that soon Hangaza Christians will be used by God to disciple Muslims.Pray for spiritual renewal among nominal Christians and for clarity in understanding the gospel.Pray for unity among churches and for collaborative efforts to reach the next generation.
