Introduction / History

The Nyika are a large group spread across the Zambia-Tanzania border. They originated from the Nyiha [nih] people of Mbozi District, Tanzania, but emigrated south possibly around the beginning of the 20th century. They now speak a language which is different from, albeit related to, the Nyiha of Tanzania. The language is Tanzanian Nyiha. They are well represented in Tanzania and Zambia.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Agriculture is the base of their economy. They grow food for local consumption. They are mainly farmers who also raise livestock and fish. The Nyika peoples are all involved with trade.A Nyika man can have more than one wife and there is a large bride price involved with the marriage. They trace descent through both female and male lines. Clans are very important to the Nyika peoples. A man has certain responsibility based on his clan and lineage. His age and rank determine a man’s status in a secret society.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Though traditional religion is still a major part of Tanzanian Nyiha lives, there is a strong group of Christians among them.

What Are Their Needs?

The Tanzanian Nyihas need the Holy Spirit to move powerfully in their villages and families.

Prayer Points

Pray that soon they will become Christ’s ambassadors to disciple less-reached nations.Pray for the Lord to bless Tanzanian Nyiha Christian believers with an abundance of God’s love, joy, and kindness, drawing others to the King of kings.Pray for them to be grateful for God’s spiritual and physical provisions.Pray for the Holy Spirit to move powerfully in such a way that they will become a light to those who still lack a relationship with Jesus Christ.
