Introduction / History

Nocte is one of the Naga tribes that live in Arunachal Pradesh, India. They have a subgroup known as Tutcha Nocte, and their language is Wancho Naga.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Tutcha Noctes are farmers, but fishing and hunting make up a large part of their diet. Hunting is part of the identity of Nocte men. They prefer wild meat over domestically raised meat. They earn money by making and selling goods made from bamboo, cane, and other natural materials.

Chalo Loku is their harvest festival, celebrated with music, dance, feasting, and rituals.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Traditionally, the Tutcha Noctes worshipped nature spirits and a sky deity. They syncretize these beliefs with those of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Christianity. A little over half identify as Christian, but they need spiritual renewal.

What Are Their Needs?

There is no future in subsistence farming augmented by hunting. Tutcha Noctes will need advanced education so they can find urban employment.
