Introduction / History

The Suba-Simbiti are a Bantu ethnic group living in the Mara Region of northwestern Tanzania, particularly in the Tarime, Musoma Rural, and Musoma Urban districts. They are composed of six closely related subgroups: Hacha, Kine, Kiroba, Surwa, Sweta, and Simbiti. Though each subgroup has its own dialect and cultural nuances, they share a collective identity under the name Suba-Simbiti. Their homeland lies near the Kenyan border and the eastern shore of Lake Victoria, where they have long maintained traditional livelihoods and social structures. The Suba-Simbiti speak the Suba-Simbiti language, a Bantu language that includes several dialects. Simbiti is the most widely understood dialect and has been chosen for Bible translation efforts. The language is closely related to Kenya’s Suba language but remains distinct. Historically, the Suba-Simbiti migrated from Uganda and Kenya into Tanzania, settling in fertile regions suitable for farming and fishing. Their oral traditions and clan-based governance reflect a cultural heritage that has been shaped by centuries of interaction with neighboring groups.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Suba-Simbiti communities are primarily rural and depend on farming and fishing for sustenance and income. Common crops include cassava, sorghum, and maize. Families often live in small villages organized around clan affiliations, with elders playing central roles in decision-making. The terrain ranges from lakeside lowlands to elevated, mountainous areas. While some infrastructure exists, many communities face challenges related to education, healthcare, and access to clean water. Economic opportunities are limited, and subsistence living remains the norm.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Christianity is the dominant religion among the Suba-Simbiti, with Roman Catholicism being the largest denomination. Other Christian groups include Anglican, Mennonite, and Pentecostal churches. However, traditional beliefs remain influential, especially in rural areas. Practices such as consulting witch doctors and appeasing ancestral spirits are often blended with Christian rituals. There is one village with a predominantly Muslim population, but Islam is otherwise rare among the Suba-Simbiti. Evangelical Christianity is present but not widespread, and many who identify as Christian lack a deep biblical understanding.

What Are Their Needs?

The Suba-Simbiti need access to clear, culturally relevant gospel presentations in their heart language. While portions of Scripture have been translated into Simbiti, the full Bible is not yet available. Discipleship and leadership development are essential to help believers grow in faith and resist syncretism. Oral Bible storytelling and community-based teaching methods could be especially effective. Additionally, holistic development—such as improved education, healthcare, and clean water—would enhance quality of life and support spiritual transformation.

Prayer Points

Let our hearts be united in prayer for the completion and widespread distribution of the full Bible in the Simbiti dialect, that every soul may hear God's Word in their own tongue.May the Lord raise up faithful Suba-Simbiti believers, equipped to shepherd their communities in the light of biblical truth.Ask for divine discernment for those navigating the intersection of traditional beliefs and Christianity, that they may be fully drawn into the grace and truth of the gospel.Intercede for Suba-Simbiti Christian workers in the Mara Region, praying they be strengthened, encouraged, and filled with wisdom for the journey ahead.Pray also for holistic development—through education, health, and access to clean water—be a living testimony of Christ’s compassion, opening hearts to his love and salvation.
