Introduction / History
The Kaninde people got their name from an ancestral leader, a notable figure in the 17th century. He even compelled the King of Portugal to sign a peace treaty in 1692, although the Portuguese later failed to keep it.
What Are Their Lives Like?
They have a strong tradition of hunting, but they also live from farming. They grow staple crops such as corn, beans, fava beans, rice, and others. They hunt a variety of animals.Preserving cultural traditions is also very important for this tribe. They have a museum where they keep items such as wooden artifacts, ceramics, feathers, hunting tools, photographs, and historical objects.

Not much is known about their religion except that they honor their ancestral spirits. The Kanindes have rituals and dances that bring the community together.
