Introduction / History

The Javieng are a small Mon-Khmer ethnic group of southern Laos, related to other highland peoples of the region. Their ancestors have lived in the uplands for generations, maintaining distinct cultural traditions while interacting with neighboring Lao and tribal communities. Laos is home to many Austroasiatic-speaking peoples who are considered among the country's earliest inhabitants. The Javieng speak the Phong-Kniang language.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most Javieng families practice subsistence agriculture, growing rice and other crops. Family and village relationships are central to daily life, with elders holding respected positions. Community celebrations often accompany planting, harvests, weddings, and traditional ceremonies. Rice is the dietary staple, supplemented by vegetables, fish, and forest foods.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Javieng traditionally follow ethnic religions centered on animistic beliefs. Spirits are thought to influence health, crops, and daily events, and rituals are performed to seek protection and blessing. Ancestor reverence and local spirit practices remain important in many communities. Christianity is present but limited.

What Are Their Needs?

Many villages would benefit from improved access to healthcare, education, and economic opportunities. Greater availability of Scripture, Christian discipleship, and culturally appropriate gospel resources could help believers grow in faith and share Christ with others.

Pray that followers of Christ will mature in faith and become a missionary force among unreached peoples.
Ask God to provide effective gospel resources, raise up local church leaders, and draw many Javieng families to Jesus Christ.
Pray for the ongoing translation work and wide distribution of the Scriptures, discipleship material, and outreach resources in the Phong-Kniang language.
