The Kaliko people, also known as Keliko, speak the Keliko language, a member of the Central Sudanic branch of the Nilo-Saharan language family. This language is closely related to Moru and Madi and is spoken in South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and Uganda.Historically, the Kaliko are believed to have broken off from the Madi-Lugbwara group during dispersals caused by the Azande armies in the 18th century. They settled in the southwestern strip of Yei River County in South Sudan, particularly in Lujule, Wudabi, and Morobo. Their region lies along the Nile–Congo watershed, characterized by tropical climate and perennial streams.
The Kaliko are primarily agrarian, cultivating crops such as maize, sorghum, cassava, beans, sugar cane, and sweet potatoes. They also raise goats, sheep, and poultry, and some engage in hunting and fishing. Their land is rich in natural resources, including gold and other precious metals found in riverbeds.Socially, the Kaliko are organized into clans with agnatic lineage. Elders hold significant influence in political and spiritual matters. Cultural practices include face-tattooing, tooth extraction, and elaborate birth and burial rituals. Music, dance, and oral storytelling are central to their cultural expression.
A high percentage of the Kalikos identify as Christian, though animism and traditional beliefs remain influential. They believe in a supreme deity and various spirits associated with nature. Rituals, magic, and transformation beliefs (e.g., people becoming animals after death) are part of their spiritual worldview. In 2018, Wycliffe Bible Translators completed and distributed 1,000 copies of the New Testament in the Keliko language, marking a significant milestone in their spiritual journey.
Despite the presence of Christianity, many still blend traditional beliefs with Christian practices. There is a need for deeper discipleship and biblical teaching. While the New Testament has been translated, a complete Bible in Keliko is still needed. The Old Testament speaks to pastoral and farming people.Rural isolation and displacement have limited access to basic services. Agriculture is vulnerable to climate change and political instability. Conflict has led to massive displacement into Uganda and the DRC.
