Introduction / History

Lomwe is a large tribe that lives in Zambezia Province and around Mount Namuli

In Mozambique. Their language, Lomwe, is a Bantu language.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Cassava is their main crop. They grind it and use it for porridge. Millet and maize are also used for porridge or for beer. They eat leafy greens and wild fruits. Their cooking is done over an open fire, often with food boiled in a clay pot.

Elders have much decision-making power and the line of descent is with the father’s line.

Lomwes get together for community rituals, music, and dance.

They have a tradition of scarification, especially for women. That is starting to fade away.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Lomwes are over half Christian, and Evangelicals are a large minority. With a complete Bible and many gospel materials, the Lomwes are well-prepared to be gospel witnesses in Africa.

What Are Their Needs?

Especially in rural areas, Lomwes lack adequate schools and medical care.

Prayer Items

Pray for the Lord to give them an abundant harvest as a testimony of his power and goodness.
Pray for Lomwe elders to put all their faith in Jesus Christ, the King of kings.
Pray that soon, Lomwes will be Christ’s ambassadors to gospel-starved parts of Africa.
