Introduction / History

The Teribe people live primarily along the Teribe River in the Bocas del Toro province of northwestern Panama. Their territory, now officially recognized as the Naso Tjër Di Comarca, is nestled in the tropical rainforest near the La Amistad International Park.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Teribes live in wooden homes on stilts, often with thatched roofs, and rely on subsistence agriculture, growing plantains, bananas, cacao, and root crops. Fishing, hunting, and forest gathering supplement their diet. Some families participate in eco-tourism and conservation efforts, especially near protected areas. The Teribes are one of the few indigenous groups in the Americas with a monarchical system, led by a king (Rey Naso), who serves as a cultural and political figurehead.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Traditionally, Teribes believed in Sibo, a creator deity, and practiced animism, with a deep reverence for nature and ancestral spirits. Catholicism is present, often blended with traditional beliefs. Despite Christian influence, many still observe spiritual rituals tied to the land, rivers, and animals.Evangelical Christianity has grown significantly in recent decades, especially among younger generations.

What Are Their Needs?

Healthcare access is limited, especially in remote villages.Education is under-resourced, with few schools offering instruction in the Teribe language.Economic opportunities are scarce, leading to migration and cultural erosion.Environmental threats from hydroelectric projects (like the Bonyic Dam) and illegal logging jeopardize their land and way of life.

Prayer Items

Pray for access to quality education and healthcare, especially in remote communities.Pray for the protection of their land and natural resources from exploitation and environmental harm.Pray for spiritual growth among the Teribe, that those who follow Christ would be rooted in faith and culturally sensitive discipleship.Pray for unity among Teribe leaders and families as they navigate modern challenges while preserving their identity.
