The Sougb (also spelled Sogh; historically referred to by outsiders as Manikion or Mantion) are an indigenous Papuan people of the Bird's Head (Vogelkop) region on the north-central coast of West Papua, Indonesia. Their traditional territory lies around parts of what is now Soug Jaya District in Teluk Wondama/adjacent areas of the eastern Bird's Head peninsula. Linguists classify the Sougb language as a West Papuan (East Bird's Head) language with several local dialects; documentation of the language has been produced by field linguists and regional researchers.
Most Sougb people live in coastal and near-coastal villages and small inland hamlets where everyday life blends fishing, sago and root-crop cultivation, and small-scale gardening with local exchange and seasonal coastal harvesting. Families are organized around extended-kin/clan ties and customary leadership; village life is shaped by clan networks, customary land and sea rights, and frequent interaction with neighboring Bird's Head peoples (for trade, marriage and shared ceremonies).
Like many communities in the Bird's Head region, Sougb villages experience influences from regional migration, administrative change, and the spread of Bahasa Indonesia — factors that affect schooling, labor migration, and local language use.
Christianity is the dominant religion among indigenous peoples across much of West Papua, and the Sougb area has been strongly influenced by mission churches over the past century. The majority of Sougb people identify as Christian (predominantly Protestant), while many households also retain elements of traditional spiritual belief and customary ritual practice. In practice there is often a blending or syncretism of Christian forms with local customary observances. Churches and Christian institutions play important social roles (education, health, advocacy) in the region.
Sougb communities need accessible, culturally appropriate Scripture and church resources in the Sougb language to support discipleship in the heart language. They need strengthened local Bible translation, literacy and training so church leaders and small-group teachers can use and teach from Scripture in Sougb and in simple Bahasa Indonesia. They need sustainable livelihood support and improved access to education and basic services so families can remain in their home villages without being forced into risky seasonal migration. They need help in preserving traditional cultural identity and customary practices alongside healthy church growth, so that conversion to Christianity does not simply equate to cultural loss.
Pray that Sougb believers and church leaders would have clear, faithful teaching from Scripture in their own language, and that local discipleship would grow strong and reproducible.
Pray for ongoing translation and literacy work: for translators, trainers, and funding so the Sougb can read the Bible and Christian materials in Sougb.
Pray for wise and compassionate Christian witness that honors Sougb cultural identity — that churches would be agents of holistic community wellbeing (education, health, livelihoods) as well as spiritual care.
Pray for peace, human-rights protection, and for church networks to have courage and resources to care for displaced or vulnerable families if local conflict or development pressures intensify.
Pray for a mighty work of the Holy Spirit in the hearts of the Sougb people, that they'd repent, believe the gospel, be saved, get discipled, and disciple others.
