Introduction / History

Pingilapese is the name of both a people and their language. Only one of the Pingilapese Islands is inhabited. It is part of Micronesia, between Hawaii and the Philippines. Within their community, they speak the Pingilapese language, but English and other languages with outsiders. In addition to their home island, the Pingilapese also live in Guam and the United States.

What Are Their Lives Like?

There is a high incidence of color blindness among the Pingilapeses. It traces back to a typhoon that reduced their population. The remaining people intermarried in such a way that there was a greater chance of genetic disorders. Ironically, their form of color blindness helps their fishermen to see better in the dark. They cultivate tropical fruits, including bananas, coconuts, and breadfruit, for local consumption.

In the United States, they have regular cultural events where they hold parties to commemorate deaths and anniversaries. Their parties involve storytelling, music, dancing, and feasting. Socially, they intermingle with other Micronesians and Filipinos.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Almost all are Christian, with a strong Evangelical minority. They can be God’s ambassadors to others.

What Are Their Needs?

They need an intense spiritual hunger that will lead them closer to the one who offers life to the full.

Prayer Items
