The Northeast Ambonese Tulehu people live on Ambon Island in Maluku Province, Indonesia. They speak Ambonese Malay, which is a local dialect influenced by Malay and Portuguese, and most also use Indonesian for school and trade. Historically, this community has deep roots in the spice trade era, when Ambon was a major hub for cloves and nutmeg. Over time, they developed a strong cultural identity shaped by both local traditions and outside influences from traders and colonial powers.
Life in Tulehu centers on fishing and small-scale farming. People grow crops like cassava and coconuts and rely on the sea for their main source of food and income. Villages are close-knit, and family ties are significant. While some younger folks head to the city for work or school, most stay in the area and keep their traditional lifestyle. Modern conveniences are slowly making their way in, but things like healthcare and good roads are still pretty limited.
The Tulehu people mostly follow Islam, which has been part of their culture for centuries. Religious traditions are strong, and the mosque is the center of community life. Alongside Islamic practices, some old customs and beliefs tied to nature and ancestors still linger, creating a mix of faith and tradition. There is also a Christian movement among them.
Healthcare is hard to access, so even treatable illnesses can become serious problems. Education is another challenge because schools and resources are limited, especially in rural areas, which makes it tough for kids to get ahead. Jobs outside of fishing and farming are scarce, so families often struggle to find stable income.
Pray that the Tulehu people will have opportunities to hear and understand the message of Jesus in a way that makes sense to them.
Ask God to strengthen those who are sharing the gospel so they can do it with love and wisdom.
Pray for hearts to be open and for whole families to experience peace and hope in Christ.
